Transformer Oil Dielectric Breakdown Voltage Test (IEC)

Professional transformer insulating oil dielectric breakdown voltage (BDV) testing to evaluate the oil’s electrical insulating strength, identify deterioration or contamination, and support safe and reliable transformer operation in accordance with applicable IEC requirements.

Transformer Oil Dielectric Breakdown Voltage Test (IEC)

Transformer oil dielectric breakdown voltage testing evaluates the electrical insulating strength of transformer oil. The test helps determine whether the insulating oil can withstand electrical stress without breakdown and provides important information about the condition and suitability of the oil for continued service.

Service Overview

Transformer insulating oil performs important insulation and cooling functions inside oil-filled transformers. Moisture, contamination, suspended particles and deterioration of the oil can reduce its dielectric strength and increase the possibility of insulation failure. Our dielectric breakdown voltage test measures the voltage at which the oil loses its insulating property under specified test conditions.

Testing Coverage

  • Oil-filled distribution transformers
  • Oil-filled power transformers
  • Industrial substation transformers
  • Transformer insulating oil under routine maintenance
  • New or replacement transformer insulating oil
  • Transformer oil requiring condition assessment

What We Assess

  • Dielectric breakdown voltage of transformer insulating oil
  • Electrical insulating strength of the oil sample
  • Potential reduction in dielectric strength
  • Indications of contamination or deterioration affecting insulation performance
  • Suitability of the tested oil for continued service based on test findings and applicable criteria

Test Method

A representative transformer oil sample is placed in the test vessel between specified electrodes. An increasing AC voltage is applied until electrical breakdown occurs between the electrodes. Multiple breakdown measurements may be performed in accordance with the applicable test procedure, and the resulting values are evaluated to determine the dielectric strength of the oil.

Applicable Standard

IEC – Applicable International Electrotechnical Commission requirements and test methods for determining the dielectric breakdown voltage of insulating liquids.
